Mr. Mikes RDP Athlete of the Week for March 20, 2023

The Athletics department would like to recognize one more Queens student-athlete as Jenica Swartz of Queens Indoor Track also had an incredible week at the ACAC Championship in Edmonton on March 18-19. On Saturday afternoon, Swartz would race to two gold medals in her first two events of the championship. She sprinted to a time of 42.88 in the 300m and ran to an impressive 2:59 in the 1000m. To cap off Day 1 of the Championship, Swartz and three of her teammates ran in the 4x200m relay where they would not only win gold but also break the ACAC record with a time of 1:50.97. The previous record was 1:54.30 from just a couple of months ago at the Running Room Grand Prix #2 in Red Deer.

On the final day, the Lacombe native would race in the first event of the day. She would run the 600m in 1:38 which placed her in first yet again but it was a photo finish as she just beat out her opponent by 73 milliseconds. She was right back at it again in the 1500m which was the second event of the day. But she finally was dethroned and took home a silver medal as she ran the long-distance race a second over five minutes. Swartz would finish off the championship with another gold medal as the Queens ran the 4x400m in 4:14 which was enough for first place. With these performances and a couple of other key victories, the Queens secured their first-ever overall championship in program history in Indoor Track.

Fas Gas RDP Athlete of the Week for November 14, 2022

Jenica Swartz was a busy student-athlete this week. She would fly off to Quebec for nationals with the Queens Soccer team earlier this week, where she played in two of the four matches. She would score one of the two goals for Red Deer Polytechnic before making a trip back out west to join the Queens Cross-Country team in Medicine Hat for their Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. She placed in fourth with a time of 23:24 enroute to a CCAA All-Canadian award.

Earlier on in her season, she was able to win first through third in the Grand Prix’s and would finish off the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season with a bronze medal in Edmonton. The Lacombe-native received an ACAC All-Conference award as well. For her soccer season, she won gold at the ACAC Championship in Lethbridge and finished her year off with nine goals and one assist in conference action. She will look forward to the next semester as she participates in the Indoor Track Grand Prix’s starting on January 21.

Congratulations on an amazing first semester and wish you luck in your studies and the competitions next year!

Fas Gas RDP Athlete of the Week for September 12, 2022

Multi-sport student-athlete Jenica Swartz made a huge impact for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Cross Country Running team at Running Room Grand Prix #1 and for the Queens Soccer team against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. On Saturday, Jenica (24:22) led the Queens Cross Country Running team to a second place finish in Medicine Hat, impressively placing third individually over 6 km among Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) female runners. As a result of her participation in Running Room Grand Prix #1 on Saturday, Jenica was unavailable to play with the RDP Queens Soccer team against the SAIT Trojans, but her contributions were felt on the pitch Sunday against the U of A Augustana Vikings. In Camrose, the Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional Medicine student scored three goals in the Queens’ 7-0 shutout victory over the Vikings. She was an offensive catalyst throughout the game, recording five of the RDP Queens’ 19 shots.

Congratulations Jenica!
