Arik Weersink shuts the door on the Thunder offence

Red Deer, January 19, 2024 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and goaltender Arik Weersink (Kinesiology and Sports Studies) shut out the Concordia University Thunder on Friday night.

The home Kings would open the scoring six minutes into the game with forward Holden Knights (Business Certificate) going bar down which ended up being the game-winner in the 3-0 win for the Polytechnic.

As part of a seven-for-seven penalty kill, forward Jacob Wozney would score a shorthanded goal with less than two minutes to play in the second period. Later in the third period, Wozney scored his second goal of the game on the powerplay to cap off the Kings scoring on Friday evening.

Goaltender Arik Weersink was awarded the player of the game for the Kings as he stopped all 31 shots he faced in the win. This honour for the Thunder went to forward and Red Deer native Hunter Leslie (Bachelor of Science) who played a solid game in the loss.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper explained the team really worked hard on their forecheck this week as well as their special teams.

"We forechecked well tonight as we were able to hold the offensive pressure in the Thunder zone. We worked on our penalty kill and powerplay this week. Our powerplay finished one-for-two. We never want to give up seven powerplay opportunities but tonight our penalty kill was perfect."

These two teams will be right back at it tomorrow evening for the rematch in Edmonton with the puck dropping at 7 pm.
