Ward earns her second consecutive shutout in victory over Broncos, Sellen scores twice

Olds, February 1, 2024 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens earned their third consecutive shutout in their win on the road against the Olds College Broncos. Goaltender Tora Ward (Open Studies) stopped all 21 shots she faced for her third shutout in her rookie season in the 6-0 win on Thursday evening.

Most of the opening 20 minutes of play was a back-and-forth battle between these two central Alberta post-secondary hockey teams. But with under five minutes to play, Queens defence Kyla Hansel (Pharmacy Technician Diploma) fired a shot from the blue line that made it past the Broncos' goaltender to open the scoring.

The Queens added three more in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of the game. Forward Jenna Sellen (Bachelor of Education) opened the period up with a goal off a backdoor pass from teammate Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education).

With under 10 minutes to play, defence Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) added a powerplay goal while forward Rylee Mepham (Bachelor of Education) became the fourth different Queen to score a goal after crashing the net a minute after Santos made it 3-0.

Early on in the third period, Sellen added her second goal of the game and extended the Queens lead to five. She was later named the player of the game. Forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) added to the scoring spree on the powerplay with less than a minute to go in the game.

The Queens will have the weekend off but will be back in action next Friday when they host the SAIT Trojans with the game starting at 7 pm.
