The Gutter RDP Athlete of the Week for November 6, 2023

After two huge wings against the NAIT Ooks, forward Camryn Ward and the Queens have extended their winning streak to six games. The Polytechnic now sits atop the standings in the ACAC Women’s Hockey Conference with an 8-2 record. With a four-point performance this past weekend, Ward was a key contributor to these two victories over the Ooks.

After going scoreless in the first in Red Deer on Friday night, Ward set up teammate Alli Soyko on the powerplay to open the scoring in the second period. With a goal from forward Chloe Belter, the Queens defeated the Ooks 2-1.

On the following day in Edmonton, the Kitimat native exploded on offence. In the opening period, RDP scored three goals, two of which Ward was a part of. She set up her teammate Rylee Mepham for the Queens second goal. A few minutes later, she scored her third goal of the season to put her team up 3-0 in the first period which happened to be the game-winner. Wards line combined for a total of six points in the opening frame. Ward added an assist on the final goal of the game scored by captain Avery Lajeunnesse to make the first-year student-athlete a perfect candidate for the player of the game.

On the season, she has seven points, three goals and four assists. Five of these points have come in the last two weekends of action. The Queens will head out on the road this weekend with their first stop being in Calgary to take on the SAIT Trojans on Friday at Winsport, followed by their third and final game this semester against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Saturday.

Congratulations Camryn and keep up the good work on the ice in your first year in the ACAC!
