Olds, AB – The Red Deer College Queens got better as the game progressed Thursday evening. The Olds College Broncos held a one goal lead in the third period, but a goal and an assist from Airdrie's Ashley Sutherland inspired the Queens to a 2-1 road victory.

The home team had some jump early. Only 4:12 from the drop of the puck, Danica Dahlin provided Olds College with a one goal edge. The first-year defender from Golden took advantage of three bodies in front of Madison Fox and rifled it past the blocker. It was the Broncos' sixth shot and Dahlin's first goal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Swift Current's Brynne Doerksen and Edmonton's Bree Edwards picked up the assists.

Madison Fox kept the Queens within striking distance. The first-year Bachelor of Science Nursing student made several key saves down the stretch.

The RDC Queens began to push the pace in the final stanza. Olds College's lead held until 7:43 of the period. In the offensive zone, Camryn Wallan drew the face-off back to Ashley Sutherland, who wasted no time blasting it past Lexi Bruce. It was a power play marker.

Ashley Sutherland continued her strong play, creating the game-winner. The second-year Bachelor of Kinesiology student rushed the puck up ice, and in the Broncos' zone dropped it back to Brooklyn Rowley, who tested Bruce from the top of the circle. The rebound was kicked out to a hard-charging Mariah McKersie, who deposited it into the empty cage. Only 1:17 remained.

Soon after, Bruce was pulled for the extra skater, but Madison Fox and the Queens locked the game down, sealing a 2-1 win.

Madison Fox, who is from Maple Ridge, made 29 saves (0.967).

Ashley Sutherland was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game, with two points and an outstanding effort.

Lexi Bruce received the award for the Olds College Broncos, turning aside 41 shots (0.953).

The Queens went one-for-four on the power play. The Broncos couldn't connect on two tries.

With the victory, the RDC Queens improve to 24 points in the standings, only a pair back of first place MacEwan University (13-3-0-0). Ashley Sutherland and Camryn Wallan share the team lead with 13 points.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the second place Queens (11-4-2-0) will host the Broncos (3-12-2-0) at 7:00 pm.
