Goertzen's double-double lifts Lions over Queens in Calgary

Calgary, AB – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens saved their best for the last quarter, but it wasn't quite enough against the Ambrose University Lions.

After the Lions held the edge in the first three quarters, the Queens knocked down 19 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn't draw even.

The Lions picked up a 69-62 home win.

Paige Goertzen's 12 points helped propel the home team to a 36-29 lead at the half.

Over two quarters, Stockholm's Sophie Melin accumulated eight points for the Queens, which included a pair of three-pointers.

Both teams scored 33 points in the latter half and the Lions maintained their seven point edge (69-62).

Queens Player of the Game Melin totaled 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals over 31 minutes. The Bachelor of Arts Psychology student went three-for-seven from long distance.

Amy Szymanek and Derian Geddes had nine points each for the Polytechnic. Szymanek was effective on the boards, pulling in eight of the team's 44 rebounds. Lauren France came off the bench and chipped in with seven points.

Lions Players of the Game were Goertzen and Danielle Trisevic, their graduating student-athletes.

Goertzen accumulated 19 points, 16 of the Lions' 46 rebounds, five assists and two steals over 33 minutes. Marin Barkey scored 17 points. Trisevic picked up eight points. 

As a team, the RDP Queens shot 38.6 per cent from the field, 23.8 per cent from beyond the arc and 100 per cent from the free throw line.

The Lions countered with 39, 21.4 and 42.9 per cent.

On Saturday, February 26, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (6-9) will host the Ambrose University Lions (4-11) at 6 pm in the final regular season contest. The Queens have earned a berth in the postseason.
