Melin powers Queens past Trojans, win five of six on the road

Calgary, AB – Led by Stockholm's Sophie Melin, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens continued their strong play on the road.

Winning three out of four quarters, the Queens had a consistent performance and defeated the SAIT Trojans 78-76.

The Trojans made a push in the fourth quarter, knocking down 23 points, but they missed a couple of late shots to draw even.

With time winding down, Queens second-year guard Keanna Richards sank both free throws and third-year Amy Szymanek converted a layup to help the Polytechnic win five out of six road contests.

Queens Player of the Game Melin provided energy and played a well-rounded game at both ends of the court. She contributed 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Melin, a Bachelor of Arts Psychology student, was efficient, connecting on 8-of-14 from the field, 4-of-4 from the free throw line, and 4-of-7 from three-point range.

Trojans Player of the Game Kendal Russell came off the bench to lead the team with 20 points. Ava Kearl added 18 for SAIT.

Szymanek and Richards finished with 11 points each.

Sidhu (14)

Heena Sidhu (nine rebounds), a Bachelor of Arts Political Science student, and Janai Hubert (nine rebounds), a Bachelor of Kinesiology student, helped the Queens win the battle on the boards (50-33).

As a group, the Polytechnic Queens were successful on 50 per cent of their three-point attempts. Lauren France led the way with five from beyond the arc.

The SAIT Trojans hit 32.6 per cent of their shots from three-point range.

On Saturday, February 5, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (5-4) will entertain the SAIT Trojans (7-5) at 6 pm at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
