RDP Athlete of the Week for October 16, 2023

This week’s Kings Athlete of the Week is winger Ashton Chipman. For the winger, it was not a multi-goal game that caught the attention of the RDP Athletics staff. It was one goal. One goal that was heard all around Red Deer Polytechnic. One goal that gave the Kings a victory over the SAIT Trojans, who were the number two seed in last week’s Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings. One goal by Chipman in the 76^th minute sent the 11 on the field and the few on the bench into a frenzy as they took the lead against the Trojans.

But it was not just the meaning of the goal that sent the Kings and the crowd jumping for joy. It was the fact that it went bar-down and into the back of the net from outside the 18-yard box. It was a ball that couldn’t be struck anymore perfectly. Ultimately, this was the game-winner in the 2-1 victory. Chipman has just two goals on the season. But they were two of the biggest goals this season so far for the Kings as both of them clinched a victory over two tough opponents. The other game-winning goal came against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks two weekends ago.

With this win, the Kings just needed a draw against the Olds College Broncos on the following day to clinch a playoff spot, which is exactly what happened. The Kings now have a chance to finish second in the South Division.

Chipman and the Kings will play in their last regular season match this weekend when they head down to Calgary to take on the Ambrose University Lions.
