Doell scores twice in win over the Clippers, Queens snap their eight game winning streak

Caronport, SK and Red Deer, November 24, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings got back in the win column with a huge win on the road against the Briercrest College Clippers while the Queens finished the first half of the season with a tough 2-1 loss against the Olds College Broncos.

See below for more information regarding each game.

Queens Hockey - Olds College Broncos 2 at Queens 1

The Broncos would open the scoring just under two minutes into the game with forward Tessa Knisely (Open Studies) tucking it past goaltender Tora Ward (Open Studies) on the wrap-around attempt.

With just over five minutes left to play in the opening 20 minutes, forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) tied the game up as she was able to trickle one past the Broncos goaltender after not getting everything on the shot. With the lone goal for the Queens, Bablitz was named the player of the game

After the opening 20 minutes, the Broncos outshot the Queens 11-8.

The second frame would go scoreless with RDP outshooting the Broncos 24-20 following the end of the period.

The Broncos would regain their one-goal lead with defence Abbey Kramer (Agricultural Management) scoring her first of the season. With the game-winning goal, she was named the player of the game.

On a late powerplay, the Queens were given a prime opportunity but were robbed by goaltender Cienna Kinghorn (Equine Care and Management) in the Polytechnic's first loss since the middle of October.

Head Coach Kelly Coulter explained the Queens did not do a good enough job getting into the net area.

"Olds did a good job blocking shots and getting into the shooting lanes. When we did get shots through, there weren't a lot of players taking away the eyes of the Broncos goaltender. At this level, if the goalie is going to see it, they are going to stop it."

The Queens will be back in action on January 12, 2024, when they host the Lakeland College Rustlers in Red Deer as for the Broncos, their first game back will be on January 20 when they host the Rustlers.

Kings Hockey – Kings 2 at Briercrest College Clippers 0

The Kings Hockey team earned a huge win against the Clippers on the road at Briercrest College, who came into the game in second place in the conference.

RDP just needed one goal to walk away with the victory in the first of two games in Saskatchewan this weekend as they shut out the Clippers 2-0.

After being healthy scratched in the Kings home-and-home series against the SAIT Trojans, forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) scored twice, which included a goal 10 seconds into the third period. He was later named the player of the game for his offensive performance and now has five goals and ten points on the season.

Goaltender Evan Fradette (Bachelor of Education) picked up his second win of the season and his first ACAC shutout while stopping all 24 shots he faced.

With the win, the Kings go into their final game of the 2023 season with 16 points.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in their last regular season game of the 2023 calendar year. The puck will drop at 1 pm.
