The Kings come up just short against the Vikings

Camrose, October 16 - The University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings were able to get some revenge on the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings hockey team.

After the Kings took the first game on Friday 6-3, the Vikings were able to come away with a 4-3 victory on Saturday night over Red Deer.

It was quite a physical battle with a total of 58 penalty minutes handed out to both teams combined.

Like the first game of the series, two goals were scored within the first five minutes. Kings forward Chance Longjohn opened the scoring but was followed up with a goal from Vikings Captain Owen Lamb just a couple minutes later.

Colby Wolter of Augustana ended the 1st period with his second of the season to put the Vikings up 2-1 as both teams head to the locker room.

In the 2nd period, it was all Red Deer. Hayden Clayton and Nolan Doell would put the Kings up 3-2. That would do it for the scoring in the second frame and would put the Kings up by one goal heading in to the last period of the game.

But the Vikings were not going to go without a fight. They really wanted to come away with at least one point in this opening weekend for college hockey in Alberta.

And it paid off. Jake Gudjonson was able to tie it up at three

Augustana did not stop there though. Veteran Austin Kozluk would break the deadlock late in the third period to give the Vikings a 4-3 win over the Kings.

Rhett Rook stood tall in the net for the Vikings and finished with 30 saves.

For Red Deer, Clayton would finish with two points (1G, 1A) and goaltender Kristian Lyon had 17 saves in the loss.

Doell would be honored with the Kings player of the game with his goal in the second period. For the Vikings, Kozluk was awarded the honour after scoring the game-winning goal.

Red Deer will play a home and home series with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans next week Friday and Saturday.

The Friday game will be at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre with the puck dropping just after 7 pm.

The Red Deer Polytechnic will be welcoming all Kings hockey alumni to this game with this being the schools Homecoming weekend which takes place from October 20-22.
