Kings and Queens tame the Lions for the second consecutive night, sweep the season series

Calgary, October 28, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens continue their winning ways to stay a perfect 4-0 while the Kings bounced back with a sweep of the Ambrose University Lions.

Women's Basketball – Queens 66 at Ambrose University Lions 45

The Queens continue to win. But it was very much a slow start not just for the Queens but for the Lions as well with just a total of 19 points scored in the opening quarter with the Polytechnic leading 10-9 following the first 10 minutes of the game.

But the offense would explode in the second quarter backed by forward Peighton Melton's (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) eight points out of a total of 23 scored by the Queens to take a 33-21 lead. Melton was leading the team at the half with 10 points.

In the second half, the Lions bounced back into the game as they outscored the Queens 19-11 with the Polytechnic turning over the ball eight times in the quarter. But the visitors still remained on top heading into the fourth with a 44-40 lead.

The Queens would play their best quarter yet as they held Ambrose University to just five points while scoring 22 to give the Polytechnic their fourth win of the season with a final score of 66-45.

With a team-high 17 points, Melton was awarded the player of the game. She also had three steals and four rebounds in the win.

The Queens will be back in action next Friday as they host the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves at 6 pm. This will be the first of two games against the North Division with the NAIT Ooks coming to Red Deer on Saturday evening.

Men's Basketball – Kings 110 at Ambrose University Lions 98

It's a season sweep of the Ambrose University Lions for the Kings as they defeated the Lions in a very high-scoring game with the final being 110-98.

In the win, six RDP student-athletes scored more then 10 points with the points leader at the end of the game being guard Derrick Amponsa (Open Studies) who scored 20 points off the bench which made him a perfect candidate for the player of the game award. Guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) and centre Jose Mauro (Business Certificate) finished the game with a double-double in rebounds and points. Mauro had 19 points and 15 rebounds while Iyamu had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Polytechnic had a small 48-44 lead going into the second half which they let slip in the third quarter as the Lions tied it up as they went into the final 10 minutes of the game.

But Ambrose could not hold the Kings offence any longer as they exploded for 38 points on their way to a 110-98 victory. RDP still gave up 26 points in the fourth but with Amponsa and guard Tyrique Walters (pen Studies) scoring half of their total individual points in the final quarter, the Kings managed to stay on top for their second consecutive win against the Lions.

The Kings will host the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves next Friday with an 8 pm tip-off followed by another North Division against the NAIT Ooks on Saturday evening.
