The RDP Mixed Curling team stays undefeated after the Winter Regional, Kings and Queens qualify for ACAC Championship
Edmonton, January 21, 2024 - It was quite the weekend for the RDP Mixed Curling team as they went a perfect 6-0 record at the Winter Regional hosted by the NAIT Ooks at the Thistle Curling Club in Edmonton.
The Polytechnic started out with a commanding 6-2 victory over the SAIT Trojans on Friday night. On Saturday, all four players on the team had a long day as they curled for 14 hours and played in four draws. They managed to defeat the Concordia University Thunder (12-5), the Trojans again (13-7), the Lakeland College Rustlers (6-4) and the Ooks (5-2). Capping off the perfect weekend, the Mixed team defeated the Rustlers yet again with a 7-4 final.
On the women's side, the Queens finished their weekend with a 4-2 record. They started out their weekend winning three straight as they defeated the Ooks (13-0), the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (7-5) and the Rustlers (10-1). But they fell into a slump as they were defeated by the Trojans (5-4) and the Thunder (9-2) in back-to-back draws. The Queens were able to bounce back and finish off the bonspiel with a huge 5-0 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs.
Lastly, on the men's side, the Kings started their weekend with a commanding 8-2 victory against the Vikings. But would fall in three straight with the Ooks (5-4), Rustlers (7-5) and Trojans (6-4) all defeating the Kings. In a must-win scenario, the Kings defeated the Thunder 9-4 to end the weekend with a 2-3 record to qualify for the ACAC Championships.
The Queens and Mixed teams also qualified for the championships that will be hosted by the SAIT Trojans from February 23-25 at the Avonari Curling Club in Airdrie.
