Excitement increases on day two at ACAC Curling Championships

Red Deer, AB – As the stakes ramped up on the second day at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling Championships presented by Holiday Inn, so did the competition. The round robin wrapped up, and teams entered the seeding process for the playoff draws.

On Saturday morning, the Concordia University Thunder Men's team downed the SAIT Trojans 6-1. NAIT earned an 8-2 decision over Lakeland College. Then the Thunder captured their second win of the day, grabbing a 6-1 decision over the Ooks at 2:00 pm. SAIT rebounded and shaded Lakeland College 6-5.

The teams were ranked from first to fourth after round robin play. At 7:00 pm, the number one seed Thunder were edged 4-3 by the second place SAIT Trojans. Third place NAIT defeated the fourth seed Lakeland College 8-2.

The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings Women's team started the day with an 8-3 win over the NAIT Ooks. The host RDC Queens picked up a 6-3 victory over the Concordia University Thunder. In the 2:00 pm draw, the Vikings continued their winning ways over the Queens in a close 7-6 game. NAIT picked up its first victory on Saturday, dropping Concordia University 9-3. The first place Vikings shaded the second seed Queens 5-4 in the evening. The fourth place Thunder downed the third seed Ooks 8-5.

The NAIT Ooks Mixed Curling team dropped the U of A Augustana Vikings 8-6 in the morning. The Lakeland College Rustlers shaded the MacEwan University Griffins 6-5. The NAIT team continued to roll, earning an 11-1 victory over Lakeland College in the afternoon. The Griffins got back into the win column with a 9-7 result over the Vikings. The first place Griffins defeated the second seed Ooks 6-2. The third seed Rustlers defeated the fourth place Vikings 9-6.

All teams will hit the ice at 10:00 am on Sunday for the final day of competition as they push for ACAC hardware. In all divisions, the bronze and gold medal games will be played at 2:00 pm. The ACAC Curling Championships Closing Ceremonies will follow.
