This Week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

This week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team will begin the playoffs against the NAIT Ooks. 

Here is a summary of the games this week:

Hockey

Queens vs NAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Game Centre | Friday, March 1 | 7 pm

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team will host the NAIT Ooks in game one of the best-of-three semi-final. During the regular season, the second place RDP Queens (19-6) won four out of five games against the third seed Ooks (17-8). The Queens had the most effective special teams over 25 games. They ranked first on the power play (15.9%) and penalty kill (93%). NAIT's power play (11.3%) was fourth in the league. Their penalty kill (91.8%) was second.

The RDP Queens were outstanding defensively, recording the lowest goals against average (1.26) and highest save percentage (0.948). Both netminders Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) and Tora Ward (Open Studies) give the Queens an opportunity to win.

Offensively, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens are led by captain Avery Lajeunesse, who recorded 11 goals and 10 assists in 23 games. Julie Wagner (18 points) and Alli Soyko (17 points) followed Lajeunesse for the points lead on the Queens during the regular season.

In the other semi-final, the first place Lakeland College Rustlers (21-4) will play the fourth place SAIT Trojans (10-15).

Queens at NAIT | Saturday, March 2 | 6 pm

The RDP Queens will challenge the NAIT Ooks on the road in game two.

Queens vs NAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Game Centre | Sunday, March 3 | 7 pm

If necessary, the Queens will face the Ooks at home in the deciding game of the series.
