Women's Soccer – Olds College Broncos 2 at Queens 0

The Olds College Broncos earned their second victory of the season as they came into Red Deer and walked away with a 2-0 win against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

The Broncos would have a very early chance but with the pressure of Queens goalkeeper Abby Kotyk (Bachelor of Kinesiology), the Olds striker put it wide.

At the half, the match was deadlocked at zero with the lone shot of the game coming from midfield Jane Morris (Bachelor of Applied Science in Agribusiness).

Midfield Sofia Quinteros (Practical Nursing Diploma) was given a prime opportunity on a free kick but just placed it high and wide early on in the second half.

Queens Athlete of the Week, Quinn Daku (Open Studies) was sent a through ball down the line but could not beat Broncos goalkeeper Kaia Galuska (Vet Medical Receptionist) as she dove across the net to make the save.

The deadlock was finally broken after Broncos striker Tiona Paton (Bachelor of Applied Science in Agribusiness) was sprung on a breakaway from a through pass that she finished bottom corner to give her team the 1-0 lead late in the second half. Midfield Brynn Smith (Land and Water Resource) was given the assist on the goal.

Paton would score her second goal of the match two minutes after her first as she was sent on another breakaway from a pass from teammate Mirtalem Vriend (Vet Medical Receptionist).

At the final whistle, Paton's first goal of the game was the game-winner and she was named the player of the match for the Broncos. Queens Sofia Quinteros was given the honour for her team.

Queens Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow simply said his team did not show up to compete today.

"We were flat-footed in the first half and the other team came ready to play. We stepped it up in the second half and if we played like that, things may have ended differently. The Queens finally started to click in the second half and the goals were about to come but a miscue in the back cost us the first goal which ultimately was the game-winner."

The Polytechnic will be on the road tomorrow as they look to get back in the win column as they head to Camrose to take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.

Olds College will head to Calgary to take on the SAIT Trojans.

Both matches will start at 12 pm.

Men's Soccer – Olds College Broncos 2 at Kings 1

The Olds College Broncos men's team made it back-to-back on the day as they followed a women's win with a victory of their own against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.

After a back-and-forth match that saw goal chances on each side of the pitch, the Broncos would break the deadlock after a goal from winger Aminja Abbe (Sports Management) who came down the wing and fired a shot by goalkeeper Brian Murray (Bachelor of Education). The goal came in the final minute of the half and the Broncos would take a small lead into the locker room.

As the second half started, the Broncos would continue to press the Kings back-line for the insurance goal but the Polytechnic's defensive line and goalkeeper held their own to keep their team within one.

After sitting for the first 45 minutes, striker Jaeden Swartz (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) would come in at half and it paid off for the Kings as he would find the equalizer on a breakaway. Swartz came down off the wing, broke into the middle and finish it past Broncos keeper Cas Blous (Sports Management) for the tying goal.

Olds College would answer back with a beautiful header off the corner to go up 2-1. Winger Sam Lorincz, a second-half substitution, put his head on the ball off the cross from his teammate and it found the mesh to give the Broncos a late lead.

Centre-back Njegos Bajovic (Open Studies) stood over a free-kick opportunity inches away from the 18-yard box but placed it just off the post as they looked to tie it up at two.

But the Broncos would hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Head Coach Admir Sarcevic explained this loss to the Broncos set back their chances at making championships.

"It's tough. I believe that every point lost at home might cost you a spot at the championships. But we are still going to fight and play every game like we are going to provincials. It has been an unlucky season for us nonetheless but we hope things change in the few games we have left."

Midfield Cameron McNeely (Brewery Management) was awarded the player of the match with Bajovic from the Kings being awarded the honour for his team.

The Broncos will take on the SAIT Trojans tomorrow at 2 pm with the Kings next match being next week when they welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The start time for this game is at 4pm.
