The Queens tame the Broncos in ACAC soccer action

Red Deer, October 22 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens soccer team come away with a 5-0 win over the Olds College Broncos in a quite chilly match in Red Deer. It was a slow start in the first half, but it picked up at the end of the first half and continued through the second half.

It was a back-and-forth match between the Broncos and the Queens in the final regular season game for both teams. They both had their chances to opening the scoring. The best chance was when the Red Deer midfield sent ACAC goal leader Sein Furuyama on a run but a sliding Olds College goalkeeper, Kaia Galuska, got the slightest of touch keeping it off the feet of Furuyama and out of the back of the net. But moments later Queens Captain Alisha Coules would drive down the side-line then make a move into the six-yard box She would control the rebound off the Broncos defender and finish it inside the close post to open the scoring in this match. The goal went unassisted.

After the goal, the Queens used that momentum to score their second goal of the match but couldn't capitalize on multiple high chance scoring opportunities. For the Broncos, they just could not find their way through the Queens solid defence which lead to Red Deer controlling most of the first half. The first 45 minutes would finish with the Queens leading the Broncos 1-0 on this very chilly, snowy afternoon in Red Deer.

An early goal chance by the Queens came from Grace Smith who struck it from 30 yards out and the Broncos keeper just got her fingertips on it to put it over the crossbar for a Red Deer corner kick. The pressure the Queens had in the first half continued in the second which led to Furuyama scoring her first of the match and extending her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Single Season Goal Record. Furuyama was able to find space through the Broncos back line and finished it between the legs of the Broncos keeper to make it 2-0.

In a broken player, fourth-year defender Kayla Yeo struck it perfectly from 40 yards out and was able to find its way over top of the Olds keeper to give the Queens a 3-0 lead. Moments later, Furuyama flicked it over to striker counterpart Corbyn Fujimoto and she had a goal chance of her own, but Galuska from Olds got enough on it to steer it aside. It was all offence for the Queens in the match but a great defensive effort by Jaden Humphrey tackling Broncos striker Tiona Paton keeping her out of the 18 yard box and denying a goal opportunity.

And the offence would continue for Furuyama and the Queens. She would score her second of the match and 29th goal of the season after running through the Broncos down the line and finishing it far post to make it 4-0. The Queens would not let up with Fujimoto finally finding the back of the net for the Queens fifth goal of the game. This would go on to be last goal of the match with Queens coming away with a 5-0 victory over the Broncos.

Head Coach Mazhiar Peyrow says the team started out very slow, but the intensity picked up near the end of the first and carried over to the second half.

"The girls found themselves in the second portion of the first half and this led to them moving the ball quickly. This was very nice to see, and it would just carry over into the second half."

The player of the game from Olds was midfield Alex Fortney and for Red Deer was Tristen Clubine. Next week, the ACAC Championship will commence with play down games on Tuesday and playoffs beginning next Friday in Raymond at Comet Stadium.
