Queens clinch a playoff berth with a win, Neves played hero for the Kings

Calgary, October 21, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens have joined their fellow Kings at the ACAC Championships at the end of the month as they secured the final playoff spot in the South Division with a 1-0 victory over the Ambrose University Lions.

The Kings also finished their weekend and the regular season with a victory as they defeated the Lions 2-1.

With the Queens really looking for a win to cap off the regular season and clinch the final playoff spot in the South Division, they were held scoreless in the first half by the Lions, a team that has given up a total of 76 goals in their 11 games this season.

But in the second half, the Queens would just need one goal to secure the victory and their playoff berth to this year's 2023 ACAC Championship held in Edmonton from October 26-28.

The goal was scored by striker Paige Kalbfleisch (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) after she received a beautiful through ball from midfielder Sofia Quinteros (Practical Nursing Diploma)

The player of the match was awarded to centre-back Kayla Yeo (Open Studies) who played in her final ACAC regular season match.

The Queens will await the games tomorrow to find out who they will face in the quarterfinals. They will match up with the second seed in the North Division on October 26 at 1 pm in the Edmonton Soccer Dome.

Like their fellow Queens, the Kings also remained deadlocked at zero with the Lions at half-time but the Polytechnic already has locked in a playoff spot. It is just a matter of finding where they will finish in the standings.

But it was a more eventful second half with three goals being scored. The Kings would get the game-winning goal late in the second half from an unlikely candidate with defender Guilherme Neves (Open Studies) picking up his first ACAC goal. Off his own team's free kick, Neves jumped on a rebound in the six-yard box and put it away to give the Kings a huge three points and the win against the Lions.

The Kings will wait on the results of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and Medicine Hat College Rattlers match tomorrow afternoon as Red Deer and the Kodiaks are fighting for second place in the division.
