Red Deer, AB - The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens played with a purpose Sunday afternoon. Despite losing their starting goalkeeper Tamera Ferris in the early stages of the contest, the Queens controlled the game from start to finish, sealing a 5-0 win over the Olds College Broncos.

Queens Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow appreciated the adjustments that the team made from last week against the Kodiaks.

"The Queens calmed their nerves quite a bit. They played the ball well and with pace," said Peyrow. "They put the ball into spots that were advantageous for us and we were able to capitalize on them."  

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens applied pressure to the Broncos throughout the first half and in the 33rd minute the home team was rewarded. Red Deer's Corbynn Fujimoto fired from long range and her strike eluded Broncos goalkeeper Maeve Vant'klooster into the lower part of the net.

Sylvan Lake's Grace Smith earned the assist.

Over 45 minutes, the Queens outshot the Broncos 11-0.

Six minutes into the second half, the RDP Queens extended their lead to 2-0. Lacombe's Jenica Swartz, a Bachelor of Science Pre-Med student, passed to Paige Kalbfleisch in front of Olds College's goal and the first-year midfielder beat Vant'klooster in the left corner.

Then in the 68th minute, Jenica Swartz made a nice move out front of Vant'Klooster and found room in the lower right corner for a three goal cushion. Paige Kalbfleisch, a Bachelor of Science Nursing student, had the assist.

Grace Smith added a fourth goal for the Queens in the 81st minute. The first-year Bachelor of Commerce student struck a hard shot off the cross bar and it ricocheted in.

Four minutes later Jenica Swartz tacked on another Queens goal. Grace Smith recorded her second assist over 66 minutes of playing time.

"I thought the ladies did extremely well," said Peyrow. "I am so proud of them."

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens wrapped up a 5-0 decision to even their record (1-1-0).

Queens goalkeeper Danyelle Bouvier stopped all five shots. Vant'klooster turned aside 20 RDP shots.

Jenica Swartz was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. Naomie Rowe was recognized for the Broncos.

"Jenica came in at half and she definitely did what she was supposed to do. She brought pace to the game. She gave relentless pressure to their back four and she was unbeatable," said Peyrow. "Every time she had the ball, she drove with purpose and that's what we asked her to do. She did well."

On Friday, October 1, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (1-1-0) will host the Ambrose University Lions (0-3-0) at 3 pm.

The Olds College Broncos (2-2-0) will travel to Medicine Hat and take on the Rattlers (2-1-0) on Saturday, October 2 at 1 pm.
