Jeffries and the RDP Queens drop the U of A Augustana Vikings at home

Red Deer, AB – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens had a consistent performance Saturday evening.

Outscoring the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in all four quarters, the RDP Queens earned a 74-47 home victory.

Led by Sandra Garcia Bernal's six points in the first quarter, the RDP Queens jumped out to a 25-20 lead.

Then the home team's defence went to work, limiting the Vikings to seven points in the second quarter. At the half, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens led 39-27.

The momentum of RDP's strong defensive play continued in the third quarter, allowing only four points.

The Queens outscored the Vikings 35-20 in the latter half and sealed a 74-47 victory.

Offensively, the Queens were led by Red Deer's Janai Hubert (14 points) and Valencia, Spain's Garcia-Bernal (14 points). Garcia-Bernal added 10 rebounds and nine steals, earning a double-double.

Sadie Jeffries, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, had an efficient performance. Jeffries contributed 11 points, two assists and two steals in only 15 minutes played. She was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

Vikings Player of the Game Mackenzie Mrazik led her squad with 13 points. She added eight rebounds, three steals and a block. Mallory Ogilvie contributed 10 points for Augustana.

The Vikings connected on 59% of their shots from the free-throw line and sank 28% of their attempts from the field.

The RDP Queens were 81.3% efficient from the free-throw line. They were 40.8% successful from the field.

Both the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (16-3) and Lethbridge College Kodiaks (16-3) have 32 points at the top of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Basketball South Division standings.

On Friday, February 16, the RDP Queens (16-3) will play the undefeated Lakeland College Rustlers (18-0) at 6 pm on the road. The SAIT Trojans (8-12) will host the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (8-11) on Saturday, February 17 at 1 pm.

The top five teams in the ACAC North and South Divisions will advance to the Divisional Playoffs. Then the top two teams from each division will qualify for the Final Four Basketball Championship.
