Kings defeat the Kodiaks, best match of their season
Red Deer, November 25 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings are coming off a successful weekend where they would defeat a very tough Keyano College Huskies squad and then facing adversity against the Lakeland College Rustlers but would battle back to win it in four. The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men are looking quite impressive this season, only dropping one match so far which was against The Kings University Eagles. This has given them third place in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings.
It was quite an energetic start. On the third point of the match, outside-hitter Nolan Moes would make a desperation dig near the border of the court to keep his team in the match. The Kings were given the opportunity for a kill on the same rally but was stopped by Gavin Moes, who was the only man at the net to stop left-handed Brett Lower (Bachelor of Science Nursing) for the point. The Kodiaks would take a 17-16 lead into the first timeout of the match called by Kings Coach Aaron Schulha. But it was a late surge by Red Deer that got themselves back into the match and take the first set 25-22 after a kill from outside-hitter Nicholas Possingham (Bachelor of Arts Psychology) finished it off.
The Kodiaks would open the scoring after a dual block from middle-blocker Cameron Piers and Moes on Kings hitter Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce). In the longest rally of the match, it was Possingham who finished off the rally with a kill after desperation digs on both sides of the court. Words can not do justice what that rally was really like. After this, the Kings would battle to a five-point lead going into the timeout called by the opposing team. Red Deer ended up winning the third set 25-17.
The Kings would use this momentum and come out strong yet again against the Kodiaks. They were playing a well-thought-out offense and finding their ways to stop Lethbridge Colleges two biggest hitters. The Kodiaks would call both of their timeouts in the matter of a few points to figure a new game place against a very strong net presence Kings squad. In what was a closer match then the score showed, the Kings would sweep the third ranked nationally Kodiaks squad with a 25-17 third set victory.
Head Coach Aaron Schulha simply said it was their best match of the season.
"It was a good time to have our best match of the season. Our service-pressue piece was big, and our block and defence piece look very organized around it. We have a tendency to give up too many free points when we are struggling which is something we did not do and finished off the match with six aces."
The players of the game went to two outside hitters: Gavin Moes of the Kodiaks and Nicolas Possingham of the Kings. Moes finished off the match with 11 kills and one service, and Possingham had nine kills and 5 digs on the night.
These two teams will face off in what will be another thrilling match tomorrow at 3 pm in Red Deer.
