The Kings lose in their final regular season game

Edmonton, February 25, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings cap off their regular season with a 3-2 loss to the Concordia University Thunder.

The Kings were coming off back-to-back shutouts with goaltender Arik Weersink being the starter in both those games.

After scoring zero goals in the 60 minutes played last night, the Thunder started off well with a goal inside two minutes of the first period. Off the rush, Concordia had a partial two-on-one scenario where the forward would tap-in a back-door pass to put the Thunder up 1-0.

Nine minutes later, the Thunder would go up 2-0 on the Kings as forward Grayson Reid would walk in from the point into the slot and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Kristian Lyon (Business Administration).

Five minutes into the second period and after a big open ice hit on the Kings, forward Dylan Esau was sent on a breakaway and he put it away no questions asked as he cut the Thunder's lead in half.

In his last regular season game, Thunder forward Keegan Tiringer would regain his team's two-goal lead on the powerplay.

The rest of the period went eventless and the Kings would go to their locker room down by just two with 20 minutes left to play.

Kings Hayden Clayton (Open Studies) would pick up his 11th goal of the season on the powerplay. Unfortunately for the Kings, they could not spark the comeback and would fall 3-2.

Clayton was later named the player of the game for the Kings.

This was the Polytechnic's final regular game and with their first play finish in the conference, they will have a bye weekend next week as they look on to the semi-finals.
