Medicine Hat, January 19, 2024 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens win back-to-back games with a road victory against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday evening while the Kings would lose in overtime to drop their second consecutive game.

See below for more information regarding each game.

Queens Basketball – Queens 79 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 42

Following a 12-2 start in Medicine Hat, the Queens' defence would allow the Rattlers to come back into the game and tie it up at 14 which led to the Polytechnics Head Coach Avery Harrison calling a timeout. But after the short break, RDP would hold Medicine Hat to just two points in the remaining minute of the quarter while scoring six to take a 20-16 lead into the second quarter.

While scoring 11 points, the Queens were able to hold the Rattlers scoreless for the first six minutes of the quarter. Medicine Hat would finish the first half with just eight points in the second while the Queens scored 25 to take a 45-24 lead into the third quarter. Guard Heena Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) led the Queens' offence with 12 points but post Janai Hubert (Bachelor of Kinesiology) was right behind her with 10.

RDP continued their offensive and defensive ways in the first 10 minutes of the second half as they managed to outscore the Rattlers 22-10 and take a 67-34 lead into the final quarter of the first of two games in Medicine Hat.

In the fourth quarter, a total of points were scored with the Queens scoring 12 and holding the Rattlers to just eight points to walk away with a 79-42 victory in the first game of two games this weekend.

Hubert finished the game with a team-high 16 points while her teammate Tricia Madourie (Open Studies) finished her game with 13 points, all of which came in the second half and was named the Queens player of the match following the win.

These two teams will be back at it tomorrow at 1 pm for the final game of the doubleheader.

Kings Basketball – Kings 87 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 90

It was quite a low-scoring quarter for the Kings as they found themselves down early in the first quarter and could not battle back with the Rattlers taking an 18-14 lead into the final 10 minutes of the half.

Despite a fightback from RDP, the Polytechnic still found themselves down 40-35 as the visitors were narrowly outscored 22-21 by the Rattlers in the second quarter. Guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) was leading the Kings' offence with just 11 points while Rattlers guard Kieran Isnor dropped 15 points in the first half.

After being outscored in the third quarter 19-16 and taking a 59-51 deficit into the final 10 minutes of the game, the Kings offence finally came out of its shell and outscored the Rattlers 26-12 to hold a 77-71 lead with under three minutes to go in the game.

But RDP could not hold onto the lead and found themselves tied at 81 with 10 seconds left to go. The Rattlers thought they had the win in the bag but the referees deliberated and said the three-point shot was made after the whistle was blown to end the quarter which meant the game would go to overtime.

In the five minutes of overtime, the Rattlers outscored the Kings 9-6 to take home the win in the first game of the doubleheader this weekend.

Kings forward Jose Mauro led the offence with 23 points in the loss.

These two teams will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 3 pm start time.
