Queens stay undefeated, Kings score 38 in the third to tame the Wolves

Red Deer, November 3, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens defeated the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Friday night. The Queens just about scored 100 while the Kings used a 38-point third quarter to tame the Wolves.

See below for more information regarding each game.

Women's Basketball – Northwestern Polytechnic 32 at Queens 91

It was a low-scoring first five minutes to open up this match-up with the Queens just scoring seven while holding the Wolves to zero points. Centre Paige Snyder (Open Studies) finally would end her team's scoreless drought as she drained back-to-back free throws. At the end of the quarter, the Queens found themselves up 23-6.

RDP continued their strong defensive ways as they held Northwestern off the scoresheet for the first three minutes of the second quarter. But that changed after the Queens allowed guard Makayla Porteous an open look at a three-point attempt that she drained. At this moment, the Queens still had a 33-9 lead as they opened the quarter going on an 8-0 run. At the half, RDP led the Wolves 46-12. Porteous had half of her teams as she went two-for-five from deep. The Queens point leader after the second was forward Jayden Demchuk (Practical Nursing Diploma) who had 13 along with eight rebounds.

Like the first half, the Queens would hold the Wolves scoreless for the first few minutes of the quarter but it was not for a lack of trying as Northwestern had multiple opportunities in the paint but could not get the ball to fall. The Queens would take a 62-23 lead into the fourth.

RDP would open the final 10 minutes with back-to-back threes from Demchuk and guard Heena Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Arts) on their way to helping the Queens defeat the Wolves 91-32.

Head Coach Avery Harrison explained the Queens played very well on defence.

"I thought we did a few good things on defence. I did not like our inside finishing. We had too many opportunities that we really should have put on the scoreboard. I am the type of coach who always believes there is something to improve on every night but we had a good game tonight so I can't complain."

The players of the game were awarded to Wolves Raylene Badger (Bachelor of Kinesiology) and Queens Jayden Demchuk. Badger had five points and eight rebounds while Demchuk finished with a double-double.

The Queens will be back in action tomorrow night when they welcome the NAIT Ooks while the Wolves head to Olds to take on the Broncos. Both games will start at 6 pm.

Men's Basketball – Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves 62 at Kings 84

In a very high-scoring opening 10 minutes, the Kings found themselves taking a small 21-13 lead into the second quarter with guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) dropping over a third of his team's points in the quarter.

Down 27-25 in the second, the Wolves had multiple opportunities to tie the game up in the same possession but could not get the ball to drop. Moments later, the game was tied at 27 after forward Manny Iloka (Business Administration) capitalized on both of his free throw opportunities. Despite being outscored in the second, the Kings led the Wolves 35-33. Iyamu continued to lead his team with 13 points while on the other side of the court, the Wolves were led by guard Tony Kibonge (Bachelor of Kinesiology) who had eight points at the half.

After being outscored in the second, the Kings bounced back for a much better third quarter as they outscored the Wolves by 20 points to take a 73-51 lead into the final quarter.

RDP would not look back after taking this massive lead into the final 10 minutes of the game to defeat Northwestern 84-62 in what was a very low-scoring quarter that just saw 22 points dropped combined between both teams.

Head Coach Jedell Foster explained he really liked what he saw from Eduardo Crespo who made his season debut after suffering a pre-season injury.

"Going into the season, I really liked what I saw from Eduardo. He was very welcoming when I stepped in to take over the head coaching duties. He is a very talented player that can play all positions on the court and he showed that tonight. Despite only losing one game so far this season, we really missed him on the court as he is so big in the paint but also can control the game as a point guard."

The players of the game were awarded to Wolves Manny Iloka and Kings Eduardo Crespo. Iloka had 15 rebounds and 12 points while Crespo in his return to the hard court had 17 points and six rebounds.

The Wolves will be back in action as they head down to Olds to take on the Broncos while the Kings will host the NAIT Ooks tomorrow evening with a tip-off at 8 pm.
