Kings Basketball had their six game winning streak snapped

Calgary, January 28, 2023 – It was a tough game for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings as the SAIT Trojans snapped the Kings seven-game winning streak in an intense match that went right down to the buzzer in Calgary.

After a slow start for the Kings, they managed to pick things up and explode offensively as they took a late lead in the first quarter, partially due to the three-point shooting from Bernardo Moller (Academic Upgrading) and Payton Baltzer (Bachelor of Science). But the expertise and the veteran presence of the Trojans showed late in the quarter as they battled back and made it close as they entered the second quarter.

After the Trojans barely outscored the Kings in the second quarter, the game remained tied as they entered the second half. Moller led the Kings in points with 12 but his fellow Brazilian Eduardo Crespo (Academic Upgrading) was right behind him with eleven. For the Trojans, veteran guard Marcus Masters stood out with a 14-point half as he led his team to tie the game in the second quarter.

The Kings were able to come out of the locker room with a way better performance both on the offensive and defensive side of the game in the third quarter as they would take the lead with an impressive 29-point quarter to put them up by six.

In a very slow scoring quarter, which was expected as both teams wanted to walk away with this win. It came right down to the one-second mark. The Kings were up 83-81 with five seconds left to go. The Trojans call a timeout to go over their game plan to get off a buzzer-beating shot to either win it or send it to overtime. This is where the three-pointer shooter Filip Ivanovic hits the biggest shot of his career as he drains a deep three-pointer to ultimately win it for his team. He was named the player of the game for the Trojans.

The Kings player of the game went to Eduardo Crespo as he had himself a night yet again for two consecutive Saturdays. He picked up 28 points and 15 rebounds in the Kings first loss since the end of November.

Crespo and the Kings will be back at it next weekend at home on Friday night to take on the Olds College Broncos at 8 pm.
