Kikuchi earns shutout, Queens pick up road win over Trojans

In less than 24 hours, the Red Deer College Queens Hockey team faced the SAIT Trojans for the second time and the end result was the same. Friday's matchup was in Calgary, and after the RDC Queens captured the lead they never relented and earned a 5-0 victory.
Tracie Kikuchi started in goal and was once again excellent for RDC. Elisha Oswald and Emma Greenwood shared the goaltending duties for SAIT.
RDC Queens fourth-year forward Kaely McMurtry opened the scoring at 14:16 of the first period. Landry Derdall picked up the assist.
The Queens' offence broke loose in the second period with 3 goals within about a 6 minute span. Emily Lougheed scored at 5:45 and Kaely McMurtry picked up the lone assist. Julia Murrell extended RDC's lead to 3-0 at 7:42 of the middle frame. Kirsten Baumgardt and Jade Petrie earned the helpers. Jade Petrie found the back of the net at 11:29 and the Queens entered the final period up 4-0.
Twenty-six seconds into the third period, Landry Derdall, a second-year student-athlete from Outlook, Saskatchewan, added the Queens' fifth goal and that score would remain intact as time eventually ticked down. Third-year, Tracie Kikuchi was strong in net and earned the 5-0 shutout as the RDC Queens won their 4th game in a row. Kikuchi, a Kinesiology & Sport Studies student, turned aside all 26 of the Trojans' shots.
RDC Queens Hockey Head Coach Kelly Coulter appreciated the result and the play of his goaltender. "Tracie was once again very good between the pipes," said Coulter. "The goals that we scored tonight were highlight worthy."
Despite the win, Coulter noted a few areas to improve. "It was a scrambly game and we had some inconsistencies tonight, in terms of our forechecking and overall positioning," said Coulter.
The Red Deer College Queens (4-2-1-0) will host the MacEwan University Griffins (3-1-1-0) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26 at the ENMAX Centrium for Pink in the Rink. The RDC Queens want to raise funds for an accessible playground at Ecole Barrie Wilson Elementary School. A year ago, the RDC Queens helped raise over $10,000 to aid in the fight of women's cancer and 680 hockey fans helped set an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Hockey attendance record.
