Calgary, AB - While the score wasn't truly indicative of the Red Deer College Queens' performance against the Ambrose University Lions, the Queens controlled the play and remained patient as they downed the Lions 1 - 0.

It was evident what the game plan of the fifth place Lions (1 - 3 - 1) was against the high powered Queens in a late afternoon game. Ambrose University played extremely conservatively, keeping their student-athletes back on the defensive side of the ball and hoping to capitalize on any potential breaks.

While their plan limited the offence of the Red Deer College Queens, Kayla Yeo eventually broke the stalemate in the 69th minute and the goal from the second-year midfielder from Calgary held up to be the game winner. The Queens earned a 1 - 0 road victory and recorded their fifth win in six games.

Queens Soccer Head Coach Esad Elkaz was pleased with the persistence. "The Lions really defended all game but we dominated the game with ball possession," says Elkaz. "I was very impressed with the patience that the Queens showed throughout the game. There was potential to get a bit frustrated but we didn't."

First-year Rebecca McBride was named the Player-of-the-Game for the Queens. The Bachelor of Science student from Calgary had a strong game and received praise from her coach. "Rebecca did a great job on defence and also pushed forward with the ball almost every single time," says Elkaz. "She pushed the line and was an effective communicator, supporting her teammates throughout the game."

With the victory, the Queens move into a tie for first place with the SAIT Trojans (5 - 0 - 0) in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Soccer South Division with 15 points. The Trojans will play their sixth game, Saturday, against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

At 12:00 p.m., the Red Deer College Queens (5 - 1 - 0) will host the Lakeland College Rustlers (0 - 5 - 0), Sunday, September 30, at the RDC Main Field.
