Petrie strikes on the power play, but Griffins edge Queens

When the Red Deer College Queens face-off against the MacEwan University Griffins it is often a close game and Friday night was no exception. In Edmonton, Tracie Kikuchi and Sandy Heim were the starting goaltenders once again. After the Griffins pulled ahead 2-0, the Queens got within a goal on the power play. The RDC Queens pulled their goalie for the extra skater but time expired and MacEwan won 2-1.

The Griffins struck first on home ice. At 9:05 into the opening period, Jill MacWilliam scored off a snapshot to the top corner to give MacEwan University a 1-0 lead. Kikuchi turned aside 9-of-10 shots while Heim stopped 6 Queens' attempts over the opening 20 minutes. 

Kyrelle Skoye extended the Griffins' lead to 2-0 off a slapshot at 9:41 of the middle frame. Kikuchi made 13 saves in the second period and the RDC Queens fired 8 shots at Heim.

At 1:57 into the third period, Jade Petrie pulled the Queens within a goal. Landry Derdall and Catherine Longchamps set up Petrie on the power play to make it 2-1. The assist was the first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) point for the first-year Longchamps. Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter pulled Kikuchi for the extra attacker with 1:05 remaining, but RDC couldn't score the equalizer and MacEwan University picked up a 2-1 home win. In the final period, the Queens outshot the Griffins 13-7. Kikuchi was strong once again and stopped 29-of-31 Griffins' shots over 60 minutes. 

The RDC Queens connected on 1-of-2 power play opportunities and also killed off all 5 of the Griffins' chances with the extra skater.

Coulter was once again pleased with the play from his goaltender. "Tracie (Kikuchi) had a strong game again tonight, as did Julia (Murrell) and Jade (Petrie)," said Coulter. "Our special teams have been very good to date."

Jade Petrie was named the RDC Queens player-of-the-game.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, the Queens will play the Olds College Broncos at 7:00 p.m. The two teams will meet at the Nexsource Centre in Sylvan Lake.
