Queens defeat Trojans again

The Red Deer College Queens came into tonight's game against the SAIT Trojans on a three game winning streak, including a 1-0 shutout victory over the same Trojans Thursday evening. After surrendering the first goal of the game, the Queens went on to pick up their fourth win in a row downing SAIT 3-2.

Tracie Kikuchi, who earned the shutout Thursday, started in goal for the Queens once again. Elisha Oswald was the goaltender for the Trojans. 

The Trojans opened the scoring 4:12 into the first period on the power play when Madison Colbow found the back of the net. With 7:35 remaining in the opening frame, Jade Petrie got her Queens on the board with a shorthanded goal. Emily Swier and Ashley Graf picked up the helpers. The period wound down with both sides even 1-1. SAIT had 10 shots in the opening period while the Queens fired 4 at Oswald.

In the second period, with 7:29 remaining, the RDC Queens took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Julia Murrell. Olds native, Rikki Smith picked up the lone assist. The Trojans tested Kikuchi with 8 more shots while RDC directed 6 shots at the SAIT net. 

On the power play SAIT tied the game up 8:26 into the final period on a goal by Tessa Wilson. The Queens battled back and scored the game winner with 5:01 remaining in the third. Keinyn Nordell scored shorthanded to give RDC a 3-2 lead. Suze Vanderlinde and Kaely McMurtry added the assists. Time wound down and the Queens won 3-2.

Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter was pleased with the complete effort.

"It was a solid sixty minute effort tonight," said Coulter. "The student-athletes stuck to the game plan and the result was a victory even after weathering some adversity."

The Queens finished with a game total of 16 shots, while the Trojans fired a total of 28 shots at Kikuchi who was solid once again. The Edmonton native sports a 1.50 goals against average.

Currently the RDC Queens sit in third place in ACAC Women's Hockey with a record of 4-2. The NAIT Ooks sit on top but have played two more games.

The Queens next play the MacEwan University Griffins at the ENMAX Centrium, Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
