Hockey Queens defeat the Broncos on the road

After a successful Thursday evening hosting Pink in the Rink, the Red Deer College Queens Hockey team faced the Olds College Broncos Saturday evening in Olds. The RDC Queens started strongly and won 4-2. Former Broncos goaltender, Tracie Kikuchi was in goal for the Queens. Catalina Hartland and Nikki Grandinetti shared minutes in the Broncos net.

The Queens came out quickly and Jade Petrie opened the scoring 13:34 into the opening period. Jessica Anderson picked up the assist. Later in the period the Broncos had a power play but Keinyn Nordell scored shorthanded with 3:03 remaining in the period to put RDC up 2-0.

In the second period the Queens extended their lead 3:03 into the middle frame on a shot by Rikki Smith on the power play to put RDC up 3-0. Emily Swier and Ashley Graf picked up the assists. With 4:28 left in the second period Olds College narrowed the gap 3-1 on a goal by Chelsea Broadhead.

The RDC Queens responded quickly. Jessica Anderson found the back of the net 1:15 later to extend the Queens lead 4-1. Lisa Campeau scored the Broncos second goal with 2:23 left in the period.

In the third period neither team scored. The Broncos pulled their goaltender with 29 seconds remaining but they could not beat Kikuchi and the game ended 4-2 in favour of the Queens.

The Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter liked the effort tonight, especially early.

"We played quite well especially in the first two periods," said Coulter. "But the third period lacked some flow."

Rikki Smith was named the Queens player-of-the-game.

Coulter was happy with the play of the Bachelor of Science student.

"Rikki played very well for us tonight," said Coulter. "She was very steady, played a lot of minutes on the back end including on the power play and did a lot of little things right."
