Kings win 8th straight match while Queens fall in straight sets to their rivals, the TKU Eagles

Edmonton, November 10, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings continued their undefeated season with a four-set win over The Kings University Eagles while the Queens were swept in three straight to fall to 6-2 on the season.

See below for more information regarding each match.

Women's Volleyball – Queens 0 at The Kings University Eagles 3

The Queens would drop the first set 28-26. It was looking like the Eagles would go ahead and take the opening game without the extra points but RDP battled back. The Queens even had a 26-25 lead but they let it slip following a TKU timeout. Following a long rally and a kill from their starting setter, the Eagles would gain that two-point cushion needed to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Queens would fall in the second 25-19 and went down 2-0 in the match. They were very much in the set to start off but after some great serving by the Eagles causing the Polytechnic to get out of system, TKU would go on a 6-2 run in the late stages which was enough to earn the victory.

Following a strong start by the Eagles that saw the home team jump out to a 10-6 lead in the third set, the Queens battled back to tie it up at 12 which led to TKU calling a timeout. But out of the short break, the Eagles gained momentum and ended up sweeping RDP in three straight sets as TKU would take the final set 25-16.

The player of the game from the Queens was awarded to middle-blocker Autumn Roos (Bachelor of Education) who finished with eight kills and three blocks in the loss.

RDP will have tomorrow off but will be back in action at home next weekend as they welcome the Concordia University Thunder to town on Friday evening.

Men's Volleyball– Kings 3 at The Kings University Eagles 1

Following a slow start to the match and seeing the Eagles take the early lead, setter Tom Wass (Open Studies) backed up the Kings from the service line to take the lead midway through the first set. Despite TKU clawing back, RDP would take the first set 25-18 following a tip from outside-hitter Noah Carlson (Open Studies) who managed to find an empty space on the hardwood.

But it was not the Kings set in the second as they found themselves facing a six-point deficit late in the game. On the other side of the court, the Eagles were able to stuff the Kings hitters at the net or get a hand on it to keep the ball in play which led to points for the home team. But the Kings were not out of it just yet as outside-hitter Zachary Neufeld (Business Administration) came on as a serving substitution and would earn his team a couple of points but it was not enough as RDP fell 25-20.

But the Kings managed to bounce back and take the third set 25-21 putting the Eagles down 2-1 in the match.

Following a couple of personnel changes in the fourth set, the Kings cruised to a 25-17 victory over the Eagles and would take the match in four sets. Carlson was awarded the player of the game for his outstanding performance on the right side where he collected 11 kills and four blocks.

The Kings will finally be back at home next weekend as they welcome the Concordia University Thunder to the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Friday evening.
