Leidenius earns ACAC gold, Kings win gold and Queens pick up bronze at ACAC Golf Championships

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Golf Championships are in the books at the RedTail Landing Golf Club and the Red Deer College Kings impressively won ACAC gold while the Queens earned bronze. Individually, Shaye Leidenius was the top ACAC women's golfer and picked up a gold medal.

After a strong opening day, Shaye Leidenius elevated her game another notch and finished in 1st place to earn ACAC gold. Leidenius trimmed off 2 strokes from Saturday, shot an 82 and finished the championship weekend with 166. This was 9 strokes better than 2nd place Kassidy Turcotte (175) of Concordia University of Edmonton. All of the RDC Queens improved on the final day. Bradie Ouellette-Pillman improved by 8 strokes on Sunday and placed in a tie for 9th (103 + 95). Paige Tichkowsky took off 3 strokes (103 + 100) and finished 11th.

As the team, the RDC Queens (364) picked up a bronze medal and were only 1 stroke behind the 2nd place Medicine Hat College Rattlers (363). The MacEwan University Griffins took top spot (349). 

Logan Hill shot an 88 on Sunday and earned 5th overall (159). One stroke behind was teammate Clayton Dunn who finished in a tie for 6th (160). Cody Clipperton was consistent over the 2 days and shot a pair of 81's and placed in a tie for 9th (162). Finishing in a tie for 16th, Justin Loro shot an 82 on Sunday (166 total). Cole Morrison fired a 77 on Sunday.

The RDC Kings won ACAC gold (with 642 strokes) and finished a total of 7 strokes better than 2nd place the University of Alberta (Augustana) Vikings (649). The MacEwan University Griffins placed 3rd (655).

RDC Golf Head Coach Scott Bergdahl was very happy about the medals and performances. "It was tough conditions today but our Kings grinded out a win," said Bergdahl. "I am super excited." 

With the top ACAC finish, the RDC Kings Golf team qualifies for the 2017 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships.

While a top 2 finish would have given the Queens a berth in nationals, there is still a chance for the RDC women to qualify but nothing is guaranteed at the moment. Regardless, Bergdahl is proud of the group. "Shaye had an excellent day on the course to earn individual gold. We will have to wait until likely next week to see if Shaye and/or the Queens will qualify for nationals," said Bergdahl. "There are many different scenarios that can still play out including checking the national scoring average."

The Red Deer College Kings will head to the CCAA Golf National Championships Oct. 17 - 20 at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club in Whitby, Ontario. Durham College will host the event.
