Kings sit in 1st, Queens in 3rd after day 1 in Medicine Hat

Even though the Red Deer College Golf team had strong results last weekend in Camrose, the student-athletes felt like their game could collectively improve. Saturday at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Golf South Regionals in Medicine Hat, the Kings and Queens had great results and took their play to another level on day 1. As a team, the RDC Kings placed 1st while Queens sat in in 3rd spot at the Desert Blume Golf Club with 1 more day to go.

Cole Morrison shared top spot among ACAC male golfers with an impressive opening round of 69. The Open Studies student from Red Deer picked up 9 pars and 6 birdies over 18 holes. SAIT's John Mckiernan was the other top men's golfer. Only 2 strokes behind Morrison was teammate Clayton Dunn (71), which placed the Business Administration student in a tie for 4th. Ryan Skoreyko found himself in 7th with a 73 while Justin Loro sat in a tie for 12th (76).

Shaye Leidenius continued to play well in competition and led the ACAC women golfers with an opening round of 79. The Kinesiology and Sport Studies student picked up 9 pars and 2 birdies on the day. Bradie Ouellette-Pillman shot a 94 (9th) and Paige Tichkowsky rounded out the Queens' scores with a 108 (12th).

RDC Golf Head Coach Scott Bergdahl was very happy with the performance and results. "The course was in immaculate shape and there was no wind. It was a great day and what we had hoped for from the golfers," said Bergdahl. "Several student-athletes had worked on their putting this past week and it seemed to pay off."

Bergdahl is hoping for another focused performance on the final day. "Tomorrow, we hope for much of the same," said Bergdahl. "We don't want to look too far ahead of ourselves."

Day 2 will continue on Sunday.
