The Red Deer College Golf team had a good showing on the opening day at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Golf North Regionals in Camrose, but they felt like they didn't play their best golf. As the North Regionals wrapped up in Camrose on Sunday, the RDC Queens showed some positive signs and finished in 2nd spot while the Kings also earned 2nd in a competitive field. Shaye Leidenius was the top RDC Queens golfer and individually placed 1st while Cole Morrison led the way for the Kings with a 6th place finish.

Shaye Leidenius shot an 82 on Sunday which matched her score on Saturday. Leidenius (164) defeated 2nd place Hailey Turcotte (MacEwan University) and Elizabeth Stewart by 4 strokes (168). The RDC Kinesiology and Sport Studies student accumulated 7 pars and 1 birdie on the opening 9 holes and followed that up with 2 pars and 1 birdie on her final 9. Bradie Ouellette-Pillman shot a 93 and finished in 9th spot with a total of 188. Paige Tichkowsky finished 12th after a round of 107 and a 2-day total of 208.

Head Coach Scott Bergdahl liked the progression of the Queens' play this weekend. "Shaye earned first place and can likely take her game to yet another level," said Bergdahl. "I think both Bradie and Paige are moving in the right direction and both showed improvement in competition."

Cole Morrison fired a 77 on the final day and placed 6th among ACAC men with a 2-day total of 151 strokes. Only 2 shots behind was teammate Justin Loro. The Open Studies student from Calgary shot a 76 on Sunday which placed him 8th with 153 strokes over the weekend competition. Clayton Dunn finished in a tie for 13th (161) and Logan Hill placed 15th (162), and the 2 student-athletes rounded out the top 4 RDC Kings golfers.

"Cole and Justin were our key performers on the men's side," said Bergdahl. As the RDC Golf team starts to shift focus to next weekend, the coach identified an area to work on. "The overwhelming biggest complaint from our golfers this weekend was putting," said Bergdahl. "It is an easy thing to work on and once they start hearing the ball drop into the cup the confidence will come back."

The RDC Golf team will travel to Medicine Hat to compete in the South Regionals at the Desert Blume Golf Club on Saturday, Sept. 23. The second day of competition will continue on Sunday.
