RDC men and women golfers earn bronze at ACAC Championship

Day two wrapped up at the ACAC Golf Championship at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club Sunday which was hosted by Portage College. Coming into the final day the RDC men sat in 2nd place while the women were in 3rd as a team. The Red Deer College golfers put forth a strong effort on another cold and windy day in Lac La Biche.

Sunday the RDC men placed 3rd as a team which captured bronze, just one stroke behind University of Alberta Augustana. The RDC women ended up in 3rd place which also captured bronze. 

Ryan Skoreyko shot an 80 today for a two day total of 159 placing him in a tie for 6th. Skoreyko ended up 9 strokes behind the leader Barrett Belland of Grant MacEwan University. Cole Morrison had a strong day on the course shooting a 78 for a total of 162. This placed Morrison in 9th place. Cody Clipperton shot a 89 today for a total of 172 which placed him 18th. Mitchell McKinnon and Colton Craner finished tied for 21st. Logan Crawford placed 29th. 

On the final day Shaye Leidenius shot an 83 for a total of 172. This placed Leidenius 3rd. Hayley Phillips finished 14th.

Head Coach Scott Bergdahl was pleased with the persistence of his team.

"I am most proud of the team for their continued fight and the fact that they did not give up once during the two days," said Bergdahl. "The course was tough and the weather did not help.' 

With the strong finish, several RDC golfers will travel to the 2016 PING CCAA Golf National Championships in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. 

"The men golfers will travel to nationals in P.E.I. on Oct. 17. The men's team will be finalized the first of the week," said Bergdahl. "We are waiting for confirmation on the women entries for nationals."

This weekend in Lac La Biche the RDC Golf Head Coach Scott Bergdahl was also named the ACAC Golf Coach of the Year. Bergdahl was appreciative for the award.

"I'm humbled to receive this award and, for me, the most important part of this honour is that it was voted on by my peers," said Bergdahl. 

The qualifying golf teams travel to nationals in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Monday, Oct. 17 with the option to practice. Tuesday, Oct. 18 includes team pictures, coaches meetings, opening ceremonies, a practice round, skills competition and the CCAA All-Canadian Awards Banquet. The 2016 PING CCAA Golf National Championship begins Wednesday, Oct.19 and goes until Friday, Oct. 21.
