Volleyball Queens persevere in five sets over Trojans

The SAIT Trojans hosted the Red Deer College Queens on Friday evening, and after some early inconsistencies the Queens played with more urgency in the latter stages and earned a five set victory.

After the Trojans won the opening set 25-22, the Queens returned the favour 25-22 in the second set. SAIT picked up the third set 25-14 and RDC responded with a 25-21 win to send the match to a fifth set. The Queens took control and won 15-9 to earn the match victory.

Megan Schmidt and Miranda Dawe led the Queens with 12 kills each. Setter Chanelle Kayser accumulated 41 assists, 2 kills and 4 digs for RDC. Libero Kaylee Domoney totaled 22 digs and 2 assists. Erin Neufeldt led the Trojans with 15 kills. 

Queens Volleyball Head Coach Chris Wandler saw some inconsistent play but liked the persistence to earn the win. "We were a bit hesitant and inconsistent with our serve game tonight," said Wandler. "However, we dug and blocked some balls tonight when we needed to. It was tough finding the flow offensively, but in the fifth set we found that urgency."

The head coach noted some key performances in Calgary. "Megan Schmidt was really efficient tonight with 12 kills and Kaylee Domoney was great for us in the match as well," said Wandler. "In the fifth set, we had some timely kills from Miranda Dawe and McKenna Barthel."

The RDC Queens (8-3) will host the SAIT Trojans (4-7) on Saturday, November 25 at 6:00 p.m in the RDC Main Gym. The Queens share second spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Volleyball South Division with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Both teams have 16 points but the Queens have one game in hand. Briercrest College (10-1) leads the division with 20 points.
