In their first match of 2017, the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team played host to the Olds College Broncos. Once the Queens jumped out to an early lead (5-3) they never trailed in the first set. RDC extended their lead to 8 points (21-13) and eventually took the opening set 25-14. Miranda Dawe led the Queens with 5 kills while adding 4 digs. Chanelle Kayser contributed 15 assists for RDC. Janelle Neyron led the Broncos with 3 kills.

The second set was close in the early going (4-4 and 7-7) but then the RDC Queens started to pull away. The Queens went on a 9-2 run and extended their lead to 16-9. To cap off the second set, RDC outscored the Broncos 9-5 to win 25-14. In the second set, Hanna Delemont accumulated 2 service aces, 2 kills and 1 dig for the Queens. For Olds College, Tara Yuha had 4 digs, 1 service ace and 1 kill in the set.

In the third set, the Queens took a 6-3 lead and kept building on that margin (11-6 and 16-8). Olds College couldn't rally and RDC cruised to a 25-9 victory and swept the Broncos in 3 straight sets to take the match.

Chanelle Kayser was chosen as the Queens player-of-the-game. The Bachelor of Science student finished with a match total of 34 assists, 2 service aces and 3 digs.

Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler was pleased with the first match of 2017.

"Tonight we did what we've been training for since November," said Wandler. "We wanted to speed up our offence inside and control our first contact with our passing and I thought that was fairly evident tonight."

The RDC Queens continued where they left off in 2016 with a strong outing tonight and a portion of that can be attributed to effective training.

"After our last day of training on December 9, I wanted to play the next weekend because things were looking good," said Wandler. "Coming back three weeks after that it took a little bit to get that back but not too long. We had a really good week of training and we saw tonight what we've been doing in the gym."

With the victory, the RDC Queens have 20 points in the ACAC Women's Volleyball South Division which places them in a tie for second place with the SAIT Trojans and only 2 points back of division leading Briercrest College.

In Olds, the same two teams face each other Saturday, Jan. 7 at 6:00 p.m.
