Volleyball Queens win in straight sets over Ambrose

In the second half of the home-and-home series the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team faced the Ambrose University Lions at RDC. The Queens began the match well and couldn't be caught, defeating the Lions in 3 straight sets.

The Queens won the first set 25-21. Miranda Dawe had 2 service aces and 4 kills. As a team, the RDC Queens totalled 10 kills.

In the second set, the Lions opened to 5-1 lead. The Queens narrowed the lead to 1 point (19-18) and eventually pulled ahead to win 25-23. Adding 13 more kills, the RDC Queens had a 2 set total of 23.

The third set was close in the early portions with RDC up by 1 point (11-10) but then the Queens began to pull away. RDC went on a 13-1 run to extend their lead 24-11 and eventually won 25-12. The Queens added 13 more kills.

Ashley Fehr was named the Queens player-of-the-game. The Bachelor of Education student finished with 26 assists, 6 service aces and 4 digs.

Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler was pleased with Fehr's serving.

"Ashley has been working on her serve, finding the right speed and space and she found that," said Wandler. "She was hard to stop tonight."

The return of McKenna Barthel to the lineup is important for the Queens.

"McKenna back on the court gives us more depth and physicality on the right side," said Wandler. "She did a good job today and last night. It solidifies our lineup but Brittney did an admirable job filling in."

Wandler liked the focus in tonight's game.

"We've been talking about chipping away point-by-point and not look too far ahead," said Wandler. " We want to just look at the next play, the next block or the next serve and we found a way to pull ahead tonight."

The Queens next play Friday, Jan. 6 at the RDC Main Gym when they host the Olds College Broncos at 6:00 p.m.
