In four sets Queens down Lions

In Calgary, the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team entered tonight's match against the Ambrose University Lions sitting in a tie for first place in the ACAC Women's Volleyball South Division with the Briercrest Clippers. After opening with a win in the first set the Queens never trailed and picked up the victory 3 sets to 1, to remain in top spot.

The Queens took the first set 25-23 and had 14 kills. Winning the second set 25-21, the Lions tied the match up at 1 set each but that was as close as they would get. In a close third set, the RDC Queens persevered and won 26-24. The Queens had 16 kills in this set, which was a high for the match. Momentum carried the RDC Queens to a 25-19 victory in the fourth set to cap off a 3 sets to 1 win on the road.

Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler was happy with the team being able to control what they could.

"We did a great job tonight of keeping ourselves on track with our side-out game," said Wandler. "We didn't look at the result of the last play but at the controllable parts of our game. We need to continue to take care of ourselves and maintain that high level of performance."

Wandler was impressed with the passing game in Calgary.

"Ambrose is a very good serve and defend team and we came out with our best passing effort of the season," said Wandler. "Libero Lauren Marshall passed a 2.35 which was her best performance."

Fauve Welsh, a Bachelor of Education student from Calgary, was named the Queens player-of-the-game and finished with 2 blocks, 5 digs, 1 service ace and 6 kills.

With the road victory, the Queens move to 8-3 on the season. The Briercrest Clippers also won tonight so both teams share first place in the ACAC Women's Volleyball South Division with 16 points.

In the second game of a weekend set, the Queens host the Ambrose University Lions Saturday, Nov. 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the RDC Main Gym.
