Volleyball Queens sweep Rattlers in three sets

The Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team entered Friday's match with a 3-1 record and hosted the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the first game of a two-game-set this weekend. Medicine Hat College started quickly and took various leads in the early stages eventually going up 16-10. The Queens showed resolve and battled back from a 6 point deficit eventually winning 25-22.

The Queens carried the momentum over from their comeback victory to commence the second set. The RDC Queens held leads throughout the second set, including 12-7 and 16-14 and eventually won 25-21.

As the match went on the Queens seemed to fine tune their game. RDC started the third set strongly opening 5-2. They held the lead throughout the set going up 16-12 and eventually winning 25-16, taking the match in three straight sets.

Miranda Dawe was chosen as the Queens player-of-the-game and finished with 12 kills, 4 service aces and 5 digs.

Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler wasn't happy with the start but liked the improvement as the match carried on.

"We weren't ready early for the speed and tempo coming across and we weren't serving our game at all," said Wandler. "Once we got our serve game in order it put a little bit more stress on them and we eased in a bit more."

Playing consistently remains a goal on the court.

"We want to work on as a group to be consistent and not let the last play affect the next play," said Wandler. "For the most part we have been cutting down on those rollercoaster runs. We started getting more consistent and at ease picking up their serving speed."

Wandler liked the calm demeanor, even when down early in the opening set.

"Nobody was panicking and we need to stick to what we do in training and rely on that. Not on any external forces, just ourselves," said Wandler. "We can recognize when we are in stress and where we have to refocus and that is on us."

The RDC Queens face the Rattlers in a rematch at the RDC Main Gym Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
