Volleyball Queens win Wild Rose Classic

This past weekend the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team hosted and won the Wild Rose Classic, which consisted of playing three sets in exhibition play.

The Queens faced The College of the Rockies, from Cranbrook, British Columbia Saturday and won two of three sets. RDC won the first set 25-18, took the second set 25-17 and dropped the final set 24-26.

Head Coach Chris Wandler was pleased with the team's progression.

"The Queens played well again this weekend," said Wandler. "We saw some growth from last weekend and are looking forward to prepare for the season opening match against the SAIT Trojans in two weeks."

Later on Saturday the Queens swept the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in three straight sets. The Red Deer College Queens won the first set 25-18, the second set 25-19 and the final set 27-25.

Sunday the Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans in the first set 25-16, dropped the second set 27-29 and won the final set 15-9.

The Queens advanced to the finals against The King's University winning two sets to one. Red Deer College won the first set 25-16, lost the second set 16-25 and took the final set 15-3. The Queens trailed 2-6 in the third set but rallied to win.

Wandler noted that the leadership on the Queens played a role in the weekend success.

"We saw our leadership and experience really play a huge role in our success, especially in the finals against The King's University," said Wandler.

The match on Sunday against the Trojans gave each team a glimpse at their opponent in the season opener on Oct. 14 in Calgary. The rematch goes Oct. 15 at the RDC Main Gym.
