The Queens sail away from Camrose with a victory over the Vikings

Red Deer, October 1, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team picked up their first win in October on the first day of the month as they defeated the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.

This win comes a day after the Queens suffered a defeat to the Olds College Broncos.

RDP was firing on all cylinders in the first half as they put on 12 shots on net in the first half but could not find the back of the net as the Vikings goalkeeper was standing on her head and kept her team in it for the whole match.

Moving forward all the way to the 88th minute, the Queens finally were able to solve the keeper with striker Grace Smith (Bachelor of Business Administration) placing the ball into the back of the net which ended up being the game-winning and the match's only goal. The goal went unassisted. Smith led her team in the shots category with a total of six.

The Queens finished with a total of 19 shots on net with Abby Kotyk (Bachelor of Kinesiology), the Polytechnics goalkeeper, only facing one shot on net for her third clean sheet of the season.

On the other side of the pitch, Vikings goalkeeper Sofia Ovarchenko faced 19 shots, saving 18 of them which now gives her a total of 89 on the season in the six games she has started which leads the conference.

Centreback Kayla Yeo (Open Studies) was awarded the player of the match for her outstanding performance keeping the team's back line in sync.

The Queens will welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers this upcoming Saturday and host the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday. The match on Saturday will start at 2 with the game on Sunday kicking off at 12.
