Webster ties game in 2nd half, Queens earn tie with Rattlers

Less than 24 hours after the Red Deer College Queens played to a 0-0 draw in Lethbridge, they were back on the pitch in Medicine Hat to face the Rattlers. After the Queens went down 1-0, they continued to support each other and tied the game in the 2nd half to earn a pair of ties on their southern road trip.
Kayla Kaip was the goalkeeper for the Queens while Kassidy Suberlak was in net for the Rattlers. Kaip, a Bachelor of Kinesiology student, stopped 11-of-12 shots she faced. Suberlak turned aside 7-of-8 shots. Malinka Voytechek, from Camrose, led RDC with 2 shots on goal.
Medicine Hat was excited from yesterday's 5-0 victory and Daragh O'Fuarthan struck early in the game to give her Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Even though the Queens had some quality chances, they entered half-time trailing by 1.
The Queens continued to press in the 2nd half and Chelsea Webster, a 5th year Bachelor of Science (Nursing) student, eventually tied the game 1-1 in the 65th minute.
Queens Soccer Head Coach Esad Elkaz liked the intensity and noticed improvement from yesterday. "I was very pleased with today's effort. Medicine Hat was pumped up after defeating Lakeland College 5-0 yesterday. After the Rattlers scored first, I wanted to change the dynamic of the game and I moved Krysten Strand in front. Krysten and Chelsea Webster did a great job of shutting down their players," said Elkaz. "The team worked very hard today. It was tough for me to pick only one player-of-the-game because I could choose eleven. It was a good weekend to build that trust and friendship among teammates. The student-athletes are still adjusting and figuring each other out on the field but it's early."
Throughout the game, the Red Deer College Queens created several breakaways but couldn't always capitalize. Elkaz plans to practice those situations with the Queens this week. "This week in practice we want to work on our shooting, breakaways, one-on-ones and two-on-twos," said Elkaz.
Krysten Strand was named the Queens player-of-the-game and displayed a strong work ethic.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the RDC Queens (0-0-2) will play their home opener as they host the Olds College Broncos (0-1-0) at 12:00 p.m. The SAIT Trojans (1-0-0) will visit the RDC Field at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
