Queens open the season with a draw in Lethbridge

The Red Deer College Queens Soccer team kicked off the 2017-2018 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season in Lethbridge against the Kodiaks on Saturday afternoon. While the Queens controlled most of the play, neither team could score on a warm and smoky day down south, and they played to a 0-0 draw.
Erin Gill was the starting goalkeeper for the RDC Queens, while Brittany Klein got the nod for the Kodiaks. Gill, a Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) student-athlete from Red Deer, was not overly busy in this contest but turned aside the only shot she faced. The Queens had 4 shots on goal in the 1st half and followed that up with another 3 in the 2nd half but couldn't find the back of the net. First year student-athlete, Kayla Yeo (Bachelor of Kinesiology) led RDC with 3 shots on goal. Both Malinka Voytechek (Bachelor of Education - Secondary) and Reesa Garez (Open Studies) fired 2 shots at the Kodiaks goalkeeper.
The Red Deer College Queens had possession early, pressured the Kodiaks on their home pitch and had several good opportunities to score but they couldn't capitalize.
In the opening game of the season, Queens Soccer Head Coach Esad Elkaz was generally pleased with the performance. "Both teams played in tough conditions today with the heat and smoke. We had some great chances this afternoon but unfortunately didn't score. I saw many good things today and the student-athletes did a great job of supporting each other. The returning Queens helped out a lot of the new players in their first game," said Elkaz. "It is only the first game of the season and now the women know what they can do. There are still some things that we need to work on in practice but overall I was happy."
Midfielder, Teryn Wright (Bachelor of Kinesiology) was named the RDC Queens player-of-the-game.
The Queens (0-0-1) will face the Rattlers in Medicine Hat (1-0-0) on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. In their home opener, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 5-0 on Saturday.
