Trojans over Queens 2-0

With the Red Deer College Queens Soccer team down to their final two regular season games, the SAIT Trojans paid a visit to the RDC Field Saturday. Down several key players due to injuries, the Queens put forth a great effort but just fell short 2-0.

The RDC Queens came out hard this afternoon, pushing the play early and hitting the crossbar and the post.

Emily Fedoriak of the Trojans opened the scoring in the 31st minute. She then put her Trojans up 2-0 with her second goal of the half in the 44th minute.

In the second half the Trojans had more of the play in the early going but the Queens pushed to get back into the game. They had a few quality opportunities but couldn't beat the Trojans goalkeeper.

Despite the loss Queens Head Coach David Colley thought the effort was there but the challenge was scoring.

"We played a great game but again we couldn't finish. In the first half before SAIT scored their first goal we hit a crossbar and a post. Krysten Strand had one cleared off the line. Again it's not the fact that we aren't creating opportunities. We are creating loads," said Colley. "We are not putting them in the net unfortunately. In the second half, even at 2-0 down we had three breakaways one-on-one with the goalie. One bad touch, another one the goalie makes a good save. They played really well. Technically if you look at the game, SAIT had around 50% of the play we had 50% of the play. But the difference was they finished on two of their four opportunities and we didn't finish any of our five."

Emily Fedoriak was chosen as the Trojans player-of-the-game. Malinka Voytechek was named the Queens player-of the game.

Colley praised the Queens Bachelor of Education student.

"Malinka has been working hard trying to shut things down. She tries to support the attack when she can," said Colley. "For someone who can get up the field like she does in the middle it's a testament to her effort, her work rate. She deserved the player-of-the-game."

The Queens face the Olds College Broncos Sunday, Oct. 23 at the RDC Field at 12:00 p.m. This game has important playoff implications. The RDC Queens have to defeat the Broncos in order to advance to the ACAC Women's Soccer playoffs.
