Soccer Queens edged 2-1 in Lethbridge

Down several starting players the RDC Queens Soccer team travelled to Lethbridge to face the Kodiaks. Having different players in new roles seemed to throw the team off and the Queens were edged 2-1.

The Kodiaks scored first in the 5th minute on an unassisted goal by Cassidy Schmidt. Time wound down in the first half with Lethbridge College leading 1-0. The Queens had some opportunities to tie the game but couldn't capitalize.

Head Coach David Colley recognized several missed offensive opportunities.

"We had a lot of the play in the first half," said Colley. "But we didn't finish. We had some great chances but sent four or five shots wide."

In the second half Lethbridge College extended their lead by two with a hard shot by Cassidy Schmidt just under the cross-bar in the 64th minute. The Queens narrowed the gap 2-1 on a goal in the 85th minute from Bachelor of Arts student, Krysten Strand. Kaitlin D'Arcy sent the ball out front on a corner kick and Strand buried the chance. RDC played a strong final ten minutes, pressing to tie the game but time ran out.

Colley thought that some roster changes due to injuries was a distraction and the team needs to improve Sunday.

"With new people starting it seemed to throw off some of our student-athletes," said Colley. "It appeared like some players second guessed themselves. Sunday against Medicine Hat we need to come together as a group. Many players need to step up for us to win and not be bothered by any alterations in the lineup."

Riley Morey was named the Queens player-of-the-game.

Colley had positive words to share about the Kinesiology and Sport Studies student.

"Riley was terrific today. It was a physical game but she played well," said Colley. "Riley had a tremendous attitude and continued to push through any adversity."

The Queens face the Rattlers Sunday, Oct. 16 in Medicine Hat at 12:00 p.m.
