Queens tie Broncos, remain undefeated

The Red Deer College Soccer Queens entered the game against the Olds College Broncos this afternoon sitting in 1st place in the ACAC Women's South Soccer division with a record of 3-0-1. The Broncos had a 2-2 record. The Queens undefeated record remained in tact after a 1-1 tie in Olds.

In their four games played prior to today the Queens had scored 7 goals while allowing only 3. Their goals against was the best in ACAC Women's Soccer. The Broncos had scored 8 goals and allowed 8 goals in four games.

Neither side had a dominating 1st half with most of the play in the midfield. The game remained scoreless at the half.

In the 2nd half the Queens came out stronger generating many opportunities.

The Queens managed to score first at the 60th minute when Kaitlin D'Arcy found the back of the net. D'Arcy, from Red Deer, was named the Queens player-of-the-game.

RDC had several opportunities to score their 2nd goal but just missed.

Despite the Queens pressure, Olds College tied the game on a penalty kick at the 73rd minute by Jasmine Flett.

Head Coach David Colley saw the Queens improve as the game progressed.

"We came out flat in the 1st half," said Colley. "After the break we came out and started to take the game over. We kept pushing forward and created loads of chances but didn't finish the opportunities."

The game ended 1-1 and the RDC Queens remain unbeaten on the season. The SAIT Trojans defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers this afternoon 3-1 to recapture the top spot in the south division. The Trojans sport a 4-1-0 record, good for 12 points. With the tie the Queens move to 3-0-2, one point behind top spot with 11.

Colley sees potential with this Queens squad.

"It was a grind today against Olds," said Colley. "We now have 11 of a possible 15 points and considering our strong play this afternoon I'm disappointed for the players with the tie. I can see what this team can do and we want to keep pushing our game to the next level."

Saturday, Oct. 1 the Soccer Queens head to Lakeland College to face the Rustlers at 2:00 p.m.
