Camryn Ward leads the Queens to victory scoring three points while Kings feel the sting of a shootout loss

Edmonton and Red Deer, November 4, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens made it six in a row as they defeated the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton while the Kings felt the sting of losing in a shootout to fall to the Ooks on back-to-back nights.

See below for more information regarding each game.

Women's Hockey – Queens 5 at NAIT Ooks 2

The Queens started off the game very well as they managed to score three goals past the Ooks goaltender in the first 20 minutes of the game. Last night only three goals were scored combined between NAIT and the Polytechnic.

Forward Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Arts in Communications) would open the scoring followed by goals from forward Rylee Mepham (Bachelor of Education) and forward Camryn Ward (Bachelor of Kinesiology). In the first period, Ward, Mepham and forward Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education) each had two points.

Forwards Hayley Kolosky (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) and Avery Lajeunesse (Bachelor of Education) each had a goal in the second period while the Ooks scored two goals in the middle frame to try and climb back into the game. Ward, who was named player of the game following the win, would add her third point of the game on the Lajeunesse goal.

After a scoreless third period, the Queens would walk away with a 5-2 win over the Ooks to make it six in a row and climb back into top spot in the conference.

The Polytechnic will be back on the road next week as they start their weekend in Calgary on Friday night to face off with the SAIT Trojans. On the following night, they will battle with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

Men's Hockey – NAIT Ooks 3 at Kings 2

After going scoreless last night, the Kings would open the scoring three minutes into the game off a shot out of the slot from forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education).

On the powerplay, forward Dawson Leroux (Bachelor of Business Administration) would add an insurance marker as he squeaked a shot from the top of the faceoff circle through the legs of goaltender Ryland Osland (Business Administration).

The Kings would take this 2-0 lead into the second period while outshooting the Ooks 20-10 in the opening frame.

But in the early goings of the second, forward Ethan Leyer (Bachelor of Business Administration) would cut the Kings lead in half which would do it for the scoring the middle frame.

The Polytechnic would continue to outshoot the Ooks at the end of the second with the total being 32-27.

It was very much looking like the Kings were going to walk away with a bounce-back 2-1 victory but with 11 seconds the Ooks would capitalize and tie the game up.

NAIT would call a timeout with 19 seconds left to set up a play and it paid off as they crashed the net and forward Bjorn Robinson (Bachelor of Business Administration) shoveled the puck past the goal line to force overtime.

Overtime solved nothing so the game needed a shootout. The game was solved in the first round with NAIT scoring and the Kings getting stopped.

Associate Coach Cody Reynolds explained he was happy with how the men bounced back after a rough 7-0 loss on Friday.

"It was a fun game to be apart of and I was really proud of the way the guys responded tonight given the game last night. We went through some stuff before the game and set some goals which we met at the end of the game. Unfortunately, the result was not what we wanted but the process was very good today."

With a total of 75 shots in the game, both goaltenders, Ryland Osland and Evan Fradette (Open Studies) were awarded the player of the game.

The Kings will be back in action next weekend when they host the SAIT Trojans while the Ooks will host the Portage College Voyageurs. Both games will be on Friday at 7 pm.
