McKersie and Queens drop Trojans, earn three of possible four points

Calgary, AB The Red Deer College Queens scored a pair in the second period and held off the Trojans' attack in the third, earning a hard-fought 2-1 road decision, taking three of a possible four points in the weekend series. 

Both goaltenders couldn't be beaten in the first period. Queens' goaltender Miranda Cook made nine saves and Trojans' netminder Kaylin Schellenberg turned aside 14.

Mary Hirsch opened the scoring at 5:43 of the middle frame, giving RDC a 1-0 edge. Kaitlan Linnell and Neisha Germann had the assists. Then over 10 minutes later, the Queens went up by a pair. Mariah McKersie converted a pass from Sydnee Decorby and Ashley Sutherland past Schellenberg.

SAIT tried to rally in the third, firing 16 shots at Cook. Eventually, with the SAIT goalie pulled and on a Trojans' power play, Davina McLeod reduced the gap to one at 19:26. Time expired and the RDC Queens captured a 2-1 road victory.

Miranda Cook played well in net, making 31 saves on 32 shots (0.969). Schellenberg made 30 stops (0.938).

On Friday, January 25, the third place RDC Queens (6-8-2-0) will face-off against the NAIT Ooks (13-2-1-0) at 7:00 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
