Queens' special teams and dominant second period sink Broncos

Olds, AB – Even though the Olds College Broncos opened the scoring, the RDC Queens had a balanced effort and tallied five consecutive times, skating to a 5-1 road victory.

At 13:01 of the first period, Megan Quesnel beat Karlee Fetch to give her Broncos a 1-0 edge but that was the only puck that got by the Queens' goaltender for the remainder of the evening.

The offence of the RDC Queens ignited in the middle frame. In less than a five minute span, Kaely McMurtry fired one past Lexi Bruce on the power play, and Jordyn Burgar, Kirsten Baumgardt and Jessi-Lynn Sumaling scored at even strength to give the Queens a commanding 4-1 lead. During that stretch, RDC's Victoria Johnston and Camryn Wallan recorded an assist each, and Jenessa Fournier and Mairead Bast each contributed a pair of helpers.

However, the Queens weren't finished on the scoreboard. At 7:27 of the third period, Victoria Johnston powered another shot past Bruce with the extra skater to propel the RDC squad ahead 5-1. Jordyn Burgar set up the marker, recording her second point of the game. The Queens kept the pressure on and locked the game down defensively, earning a 5-1 decision.

With a balanced attack, five different student-athletes struck for the Queens, including two defencemen, and the RDC team applied a lot of pressure on the Broncos over 60 minutes. "It was nice to spread out the scoring," says Kelly Coulter, Queens Hockey Head Coach. "Our forecheck and pressure on the puck were good tonight."

The RDC Queens connected on two out of eight power play opportunities while also killing off all four of the Broncos' advantages. "Our execution on special teams were very good which started with a strong performance on face-offs," says Coulter.

The Queens outshot the Broncos 44-16. Fetch turned aside 16 out of 17 shots (0.941)

Jordyn Burgar, a Bachelor of Kinesiology student from Sylvan Lake, was selected as the Queens Player-of-the Game, scoring the game-winning-goal and adding an assist. Hanna Wadlegger received the award for the Broncos.

In the final RDC Queens' conference game of 2018, they (5 W-5 L-1 OTL-0 T) will play the Olds College Broncos (3-7-1-0) on Saturday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
