Griffins defeat Queens 2-1

In a battle for second in the ACAC Women's Hockey standings, the Red Deer College Queens competed against the MacEwan University Griffins on the road. The Queens opened the scoring but the Griffins scored 2 third period goals for the 2-1 win. Jen West was in net for RDC while Sandy Heim played goal for MacEwan University.

Breanna Martin put the Queens up 1-0 at 10:28 into the opening period. Emily Swier and Landry Derdall picked up the assists. West stopped all 5 shots she faced while Heim turned aside 6-of-7 shots.

There was no scoring in the second period. The Queens tested Heim 10 times while the Griffins fired 6 shots at West. 

Morgan Casson tied the game 1-1 on the power play at 7:07 of the third period. With 1:05 remaining in the game Michelle Pochapsky put the Griffins up 2-1 on the power play. The Queens pulled the goaltender with 45 seconds left but time ran out and the Griffins picked up the home win. Directing 6 more shots on net in the final frame, the Queens totalled 23 shots. The Griffins had 14 shots on West in the period for a game total of 25. 

Jen West was sharp stopping 23-of-25 shots and had a busy third period.

Breanna Martin, from Red Deer, was named the Queens player-of-the-game. 

The RDC Queens went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Griffins connected on 2-of-9 opportunities with the extra skater.

"Our special teams need to be better," said Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter. "We can't let teams hang around and we need to capitalize on our scoring chances."

At the ENMAX Centrium, the RDC Queens host the MacEwan University Griffins Sunday, Nov. 20 at 5:00 p.m.
